By day

Day trips from DC

All within an hour of downtown, and all easier with a car waiting for you.

Great Falls Park

The Potomac crashes through a rocky gorge about 15 miles from DC. Short walks lead to the overlooks; longer trails follow the river for hikers.

Old Town Alexandria

Cobblestone streets, King Street shops and cafés, the Torpedo Factory and the waterfront. See our Alexandria guide.

Mount Vernon

George Washington’s estate on the Potomac, about 16 miles south. See our Mount Vernon guide.

Fort Washington Park

A 19th-century fort on the Maryland shore with sweeping river views and room for a picnic.

Georgetown

Historic rowhouses, shops and the C&O Canal, a perfect half-day before dinner.

Virginia wine country

Loudoun County wineries are under an hour away. See wine tours.

After dark

Washington by night

The monuments lit up. The Lincoln, Jefferson, FDR, Martin Luther King Jr. and World War II memorials are open around the clock and beautifully lit. The Tidal Basin and the Capitol dome are unforgettable after dark.

Arlington views. The Air Force Memorial and the Marine Corps War Memorial look back across the river at the illuminated city.

The waterfronts. The Wharf, Georgetown Waterfront and Old Town Alexandria come alive in the evening, and several offer dinner and sightseeing cruises.

A show. The Kennedy Center, the National Theatre, Wolf Trap in season, or a game at Capital One Arena, with a car waiting when it ends.

FAQ

Day and night tour questions

What is the best time for a night monument tour?

Start about 30 minutes after sunset, when the memorials are lit and the sky still has some color. The memorials on the National Mall are open 24 hours, so late tours work too.

Can we combine a day trip and a night tour?

Yes. A popular plan is an afternoon at Great Falls or Old Town Alexandria, dinner on the waterfront, then the monuments after dark, all with the same chauffeur.

How much does a private day or night tour cost?

Tours are booked by the hour: from $89 per hour for a sedan, $105 for an SUV and $129 for a Sprinter for up to 14, with minimums. See our DC tours page for details.

Is Great Falls Park worth the trip?

Yes. The falls are about 15 miles from downtown DC, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by car, and the overlooks are a short walk from the visitor center. Note that the park charges an entrance fee per vehicle.
